Problem #1: People with GE side-by-side refrigerators often report that their refrigerator is freezing food, even when it is set to lowest cooling. This obviously draws a lot of panic and concern. However, once you understand it, it is not a very complicated problem to troubleshoot.
Solution: There are three possible reasons why your refrigerator is freezing food – either your cold control has given out, your door damper is broken or stuck in the open position, or your freezer’s evaporator fan motor is damaged. The first thing you should do is check your damper door. Does it close smoothly when you open your refrigerator door, or is it stuck open? If it is stuck, you will need to get it replaced.
If the problem is not with your damper door, there is a simple test you can do to check your evaporator fan motor and cold control. Set your temperature controls to the middle positions, and place a plastic cup with water in your top, middle and bottom compartments. After 24 hours, if all the cups are frozen, the problem is that your cold control is not shutting down your unit when it has reached the pre-set temperature. If only the middle and bottom cups are frozen, the problem is probably with your freezer’s evaporator fan motor.
Problem #2: Users with GE side-by-side models have also reported trouble of the opposite kind. They complain that their freezer cools but does not freeze things (it works like a fridge), and the fridge side is also a bit warmer than usual.
Solution: Once again, this is not a complex GE refrigerator repair issue to diagnose. There are a couple of things that need to be checked. First, open the rear panel of your freezer and check if ice and frost have built up there. If yes, your defrost system is malfunctioning, and that is probably what is causing the temperature increase. The other thing to do is check your condenser grill. If it is clogged or really dirty (as is often the case in older refrigerators), it only makes your cooling problem worse. To clean your compressor grill, use a vacuum at the front and an air compressor at the back simultaneously. Then observe your cooling – it should now work fine.
Problem #3: Another common problem that most people report with side-by-side models is a leakage through their water dispenser. Until they completely shut down the water inlet, the dispenser is unable to regulate water flow.
Solution: There are two possible problems that could be causing water leakage through your dispenser. To find out, keep the water on and unplug the water valve from the back. If the water flow stops immediately, it means that the problem is with your dispenser switch, and it needs to be replaced. If the water flow does not stop even after unplugging the water valve, it shows that the problem is with your water valve. Either the valve is stuck for some mechanical reason or air has built-up in your water line, creating what is known as the siphon effect. Try flushing out the air. If that still does not solve the problem, you will need to get your water valve checked and possibly replaced.
